We’re Shirley and Matt, hosts of spicy romantic getaways in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia. When we launched Secret Box Cabin in 2023, our goal has always been to help you connect intimately with your partner in ways you need or just never explored before. As a couple with 20+ years of marriage, we understand that work, children, and life can sometimes make it impossible to be truly connect. We did our best to find you secluded getaways with privacy, views and a stay that feels authentically romantic. There is something breathtakingly romantic about stripping away the noise of a 200-person guest list, the endless catering contracts, and the mounting stress of a traditional wedding. Deciding to ditch the big venue for an intimate, surprise elopement getaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a beautiful choice — but making it a true secret takes the romance to an entirely new level.
Before we dive into the fun logistics, we need to share a crucial piece of advice from a place of love: if this elopement is going to be a total surprise to your partner, make sure you’ve dropped plenty of hints beforehand to ensure they are on the exact same page. It would be absolutely terrible to go through all the emotional hassle, secret planning, and financial expense only to get a hesitant “no” or an overwhelmed “not like this.” Because of the extensive, custom coordination that goes into pulling off these events, please note that if there is a cancellation because your partner says no, we cannot offer a refund. The biggest hurdle of a surprise elopement is making sure your partner packs clothes they will actually feel beautiful, confident, and proud to get married in — all without giving the secret away. The ultimate cover story? Tell them you have booked a professional, high-end couples’ photography session in the mountains as a special gift.
This gives you the perfect excuse to help them pack their favorite formal or semi-formal wear, coordinating outfits, and elegant shoes. To take it a step further, treat them to a “pre-trip spa day” for hair, makeup, or nail grooming under the guise of being camera-ready for the session. When the big moment arrives, they’ll look and feel exactly how they would want to on their wedding day.
A surprise elopement shouldn’t feel like a rushed, high-stress business trip. We highly recommend a stay of at least 3 days. This gives you one dedicated day for the big surprise and the ceremony, leaving the rest of your trip completely open to unwind, explore, and celebrate your new status without watching the clock.
Additionally, you need to plan your elopement a few months in advance. Giving yourself a few months ensures you have plenty of time to quietly collaborate with your hosts and vendors, locking down every moving part without raising any suspicion at home.
You cannot truly let your guard down, say your vows, or celebrate your new status if you are sharing a wall with strangers at a massive commercial resort, or dodging tourists at a public state park overlook.
When you look for a home base, prioritize properties explicitly designed for just two adults. You want a dedicated, distraction-free sanctuary where the outside world completely melts away. We intentionally design the schedule to give your partner plenty of breathing room after the initial surprise of saying “yes,” allowing them a stress-free window to finalize their outfit, touch up makeup, and feel entirely comfortable before exchanging vows.
Once the vows are exchanged, the magic shouldn’t stop. We recommend gamifying your celebration to keep the playful energy alive.
